Four time Super Bowl Champion and former Steelers head coach Chuck Noll has passed away at age 82. Coach Noll had recently been treated for an undisclosed illness according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and reportedly had been suffering from Alzheimer’s, a heart condition and a bad back for several years.

Coach Noll was a first ballot Hall of Famer, being inducted just two short years after his retirement; 23 years as head coach of the Steelers, stints as defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Colts and San Diego Chargers, and seven seasons playing for the Cleveland Browns. The no-nonsense, tough working defensive mindset of Noll built the legendary Steel Curtain of the 1970s which would go on to become the team’s primary identity through the following decades. Quite simply, without Noll the Steelers would be just any other football team. Pittsburgh would be just any other city. He created a football dynasty and helped give a city hope.
