Group F wraps up its first round this morning with Argentina already moving forward, Bosnia and Herzegovina already out, leaving Iran and Nigeria (battle oil!) fighting for the other spot. With a win or a draw against Argentina, Nigeria end up on top while a loss sends them home, a brutal position to find one’s self in when facing one of the world’s best players, Lionel Messi, on the other side of the field. Iran needs to win against Bosnia and Herzegovina and for Nigeria to lose in order to continue on to the next round, a tough order for a team that has yet to score this tourney against a Bosnian and Herzegovinan that isn’t as bad as their standing reflects. Edin Dzeko and company held their own against against the Argentineans who were saved by Messi late in the game, and then couldn’t find the breakthrough they needed against Nigeria. Today should see them pressing hard to show they belong on the world stage.
The late games pit Honduras against Switzerland and Ecuador against France in Group E, which all but looks sewn up for France to take, with Switzerland and Ecuador fighting it out for the second spot. Switzerland has an easier go of it facing lackluster Honduran team that has yet to win a match while Ecuador plays who is surprisingly turning out to be one the best sides in the tourney, France. For those of you who complain about the lack of scoring? The French have scored eight so far in two games, so tune into that match for all your “GOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL” Univision needs.
