Here at KSK, we have a great time poking fun at all the dumb shit that goes on in the NFL. If a player gets arrested for something really stupid, or a mainstream columnist writes an even-dumber-than-usual column about why concussions just aren’t that big of a deal, you can bet we’ll be on the case.
But once in awhile, something genuinely nice comes around and momentarily melts our cold, cynical hearts. That’s what happened when the New Orleans Saints signed former Tulane safety Devon Walker to a contract. Who is Devon Walker, you ask? He was a promising safety with the Green Wave, who had a decent shot at eventually playing in the NFL before he was paralyzed from the waist down in 2012. It was a chilling reminder of the risks football players take, and sadly, prematurely ended a football career with a ton of potential.
The Saints signing Walker to a contract ultimately won’t fix the damage done to Walker’s career and his life caused by the injury, but it is one of the rare uncompromisingly kind gestures we get to see in this league. As football fans, it can be disheartening to see bleak story after bleak story about Richie Incognito bullying teammates, or Josh Gordon potentially missing an entire season because heaven forbid he smoke a fucking joint, and it’s nice to get a bit genuinely nice news once in awhile.
When Michael Sam makes his first appearance in a preseason game, and someone from the Dolphins (it’s ALWAYS the Dolphins) makes some dumbass homophobic tweet that makes the rounds on the internet, I’ll think of this story, and remind myself that every once in a while, the NFL is not a cold, dead place.
I want more like this!
