A week ago, Jared Allen appeared to be closing on joining the Seahawks juggernaut. Instead, Allen will remain in the NFC North, joining the Bears, a team more direly in need of his services. And also one more likely to meet his salary demands. Chicago gave Allen a four-year, $32 million contract with $15.5 million guaranteed.

The Bears had lost their best pass rusher, 34-year-old Julius Peppers, in free agency to the Packers. Now it’s Chicago’s turn to take the premier pass rusher from a division rival. Allen turns 32 in a little over a week, so overall the Bears got a little younger with a defensive end who’s had better output in recent years. Coupled with the signing of Lamarr Houston, it should improve a front seven that was a liability for the Bears in 2013. At least, it should improve for a year or two until Allen hits the wall. Though Pro Football Focus says that falloff has already begun.

Oh, and they finally have a player who will take Jay Cutler crossbow hunting. Let’s make that happen soon, guys.
