We already reported that two members of Congress on Monday got out their officials pens to write words sternly in the direction of the NFL, specifically that the league could lose its non-profit tax-exempt status if the Washington Redskins don’t change their name.

Well, the ‘Skins aren’t about to let that politician saber-rattling go unanswered. Team spokesman Tony Wyllie issued a written statement in response to the letter from Sen. Maria Cantwell and Rep. Tom Cole.

“With all the important issues Congress has to deal with such as a war in Afghanistan to deficits to health care, don’t they have more important issues to worry about than a football team’s name? And given the fact that the name of Oklahoma means ‘Red People’ in Choctaw, this request is a little ironic.”

Cole, by the way, is a representative from Oklahoma and the only tribal Native American currently serving in Congress. So that’s quite the kiss off.

So there you have it, Congress. As soon as you fix all the other issues that Tony Wyllie deems more pressing than not offending Native Americans, you’ll have a new team name in Washington. Should be any month now.
