Ray Rice was arrested in an Atlantic City casino on Saturday morning for what was described by his attorney as “a very minor altercation” with his fiancee. Definitions of very minor altercations may vary if there’s any truth to the report by a Deadspin tipster (way to have the Atlantic City beat locked down, guys) that the episode between Rice and his fiancee commenced when she spit on him and concluded when he uppercut her, knocking her unconscious.

Rice has been fairly drama free off the field during his NFL career, which enabled him to do things like be smug when other players get into trouble. For instance, when Hines Ward was arrested for a DUI in 2011, Rice took to social media to proclaim Ward’s arrest to be “not a good look” then lectured the former Steelers receiver on the responsibility of being a role model.

“People look up to you, Hines,” said Rice, who is hosting a football camp at Towson University this week. “You just were on TV with Dancing with the Stars. Ravens fans were upset that you won Dancing with the Stars but they still watched you. That shows your charisma and character. You’ve got a legacy in the NFL that no one can take away from you. But if you hurt somebody drunk driving, that takes away a lot.”

Some explained that Rice is especially sensitive to drunk driving offenses as his cousin was killed by a drunk driver in 1998, though he somehow neglected to publicly shame Donte Stallworth when the two were teammates in 2010. Nevertheless, it should be easy to find someone who has been affected by spousal violence to come forward and get holier-than-thou on Ray Rice not that his immaculate character is finally being called into question.
