Retired safety Darren Sharper turned himself in last night to the Los Angeles Police Department after an arrest warrant was issued by the New Orleans authorities for two counts of aggravated rape. The Orleans Parish district attorney has also issued an arrest warrant for a second man, Erik Nunez, in connection with the case for two counts of aggravated rape. If convicted in Louisiana of aggravated rape, the two men face life in prison without the possibility of parole, probation of suspension of the sentence.
Sharper is now being investigated for 11 cases involving drugging his victims and at least eight incidents of rape or sexual assault in five different states. In addition to the charges in New Orleans, Sharper has a hearing in April in California relating to two cases of assault and rape after drugging two women in a West Hollywood nightclub. Police in Tempe, Arizona are expected to file charges against Sharper as soon as they conclude their lab work in connection with drugging and assaulting two women in November. Another woman has a filed sexual battery complaint against Sharper in Miami Beach, Florida relating to 2012 incident after meeting him at a nightclub and similar investigations are being pursued against Sharper in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Los Angeles charges for which Sharper is awaiting trial could result in more than 30 years in prison, so expect to see some venue shopping soon for the five-time Pro Bowler.
