Russell Wilson stripped on the opening play by Aldon Smith and the Niners take over the Seattle 15. San Francisco can’t take advantage. Colin Kaepernick took a designed quarterback draw in 3rd and 6 but was stopped about two yards short. Still, the 49ers came away with a field goal for the game’s first lead.
Seattle goes three-and-out on the following possession. That’s not a turnover, so hey, progress. San Francisco finally gets the opening first down of the game on a dump pass to Vance McDonald. Kaepernick was having success with designed runs, though the traditional run game with Frank Gore wasn’t making a ton of headway. The Niners faced a 4th and 1 from the Seattle’ 41 but decided against trying for the first. Perhaps a questionable decision by Jim Harbaugh, though at least the ensuing punt trapped the Seahawks at their own 1.
Seattle finally got some traction and a first down via a pass that probably should have been intercepted by Eric Reid.
A questionable personal foul penalty on Donte Whitner on a hit to Luke Willson got the ball near midfield, but a holding call on the Seahawks and a NaVorro Bowman sack put an end to the Seattle drive.
LaMichael James muffed the resulting punt and got nearly decapitated to boot. Luckily for his next of kin, the 49ers retained possession. A few plays later, Kaepernick took off on a 58-yard scramble to put the 49ers in scoring range. Frank Gore was initially ruled to have a one-yard touchdown run on 3rd and goal, but that was overturned on review. San Francisco decided to go for it on fourth and Anthony Dixon launched over the pile to give San Francisco a 10-0 lead.
Just when Seattle desperately needed something on offense, Russell Wilson went into extend the play mode, frantically running around behind the line of scrimmage just to stop and launch the ball 51 yards down the field to Doug Baldwin to move inside the 49ers’ 20. That’s about as far as they got, but it was still enough to get on the board with a field goal.
A San Francisco three and out gave the Seahawks a chance to tie just before the half. With the ball just past midfield, the Seahawks drew a false start penalty to get a 3rd and 8, but Wilson make a clutch conversion of a slant throw to Baldwin to get a first down with a minute and a half remaining. The Seahawks failed a 4th down attempt, but Carlos Rogers was hit was a bullshit personal foul after the incompletion for pushing the receiver. Luckily, it was a post-possession foul and the half ended with a 10-3 score.
