Jon: WELCOME BACK TO GRUDEN TALK, THE TALK SHOW WHERE WE DISCUSS THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES OF THE DAY. BANDLEADER HERM EDWARDS, DID YOU SEE THAT PETE SEEGER DIED YESTERDAY?
Herm: I ONLY LIKE MUSIC WITH FUNKY BASS RIFFS.
Jon: WELL THAT’S TOO BAD, BECAUSE SEEGER SPENT ABOUT 70 YEARS MAKING MUSIC. ANYWAY, WE HAVE HIS BIOGRAPHER DAVID DUNAWAY HERE TO DISCUSS HIS LEGACY. DAVID, HOW YA DOIN’?
David: I’m doing well, Jon.
Jon: SO THIS SEEGER, WHAT’S HIS LEGACY GOING TO BE?
Herm: I WANT TO BE KNOWN AS THE PRESIDENT CAMACHO OF MUSIC.
David: Pete Seeger’s legacy won’t be confined to music. His story is the story of liberalism in the 20th Century, replete with all of its failures and successes.
Jon: I GOTTA DISAGREE WITH YOU THERE, PEOPLE STILL THINK OF ME AS A SUPER BOWL CHAMPION EVEN THOUGH I WENT 5-11 TWO YEARS LATERj.
Herm: THE ONLY PERSON WHO WANTS ME TO GO BACK INTO COACHING IS MY WIFE. SHE’S SICK OF ME ONLY COMING INTO WORK ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS.
David: Well, of course he will be remembered fondly for his music. But he suffered through the Red Scare, he saw Nixon send scores of young people off to die in Vietnam and the same thing 35 years later with Bush and Iraq.
Jon: THIS RED SCARE, I CALL IT CHARACTER ISSUES BECAUSE EVERY SCOUT THAT DOESN’T LIKE YOU WILL SAY IT AND HOPE TO SEE IF THAT SHIT STICKS TO THE WALL.
Herm: WALTER WINCHELL LEAKED VINCE YOUNG’S WONDERLIC.
David: And like many liberals Seeger’s career suffered when he was tarred as a Communist. But today we see him standing up to HUAC and recognize that he was a hero.
Jon: THE ONLY UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITY THAT CONGRESS SHOULD INVESTIGATE IS DRAW PLAYS ON THIRD AND LONG.
Herm: KEVIN GILBRIDE DEFECTED TO THE SOVIET UNION.
David: But we should focus on Pete’s triumphs, and his music. We Shall Overcome became a civil rights anthem. He really showed just how powerful folk music could be in galvanizing people.
Jon: A TRADITION THAT LIVES ON TO THIS DAY. AFTER ALL, WE ALL COME TOGETHER TO SING THAT SONG BY THE ETHNIC GIRL BEFORE THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL.
Herm: I DON’T KNOW WHAT RACE SHE IS BUT I DON’T CARE.
David: Actually, Pete hated the commercialization of music. He liked folk music because it was of the people, for the people. It came from America’s roots and you don’t need it to be heavily produced. It stands on its own.
Jon: I HEAR YA, QUALITY WILL ALWAYS STAND ON ITS OWN. FOLK MUSIC IS LIKE A EAST RIGHT SLOT FAKE 5 BLUNT NAKED RIGHT – IT’LL ALWAYS BE RELEVANT.
Herm: ALL OF MY PLAYS ARE NAMED AFTER COMMODORES SONGS.
David: And I think Pete would want his legacy to be about music more than anything. He would want everyone to know that the song inside you is important, and that your story deserves to be heard. He spent eight decades singing those songs.
Jon: I HEAR YA, JUST LIKE HOW INSIDE EVERY PEEWEE FOOTBALL PLAYER IS A GRUDEN GRINDER WAITING TO BURST OUT, WATCH TAPE, AND SHOOT THE A GAP.
Herm: I MAKE UP THE SONGS IN ME AS I GO ALONG.
David: I’m afraid I’m lost.
Jon: THAT’S OK, BECAUSE WE’RE OUT OF TIME ON GRUDEN TALK. PLAY US OFF, BANDLEADER HERM EDWARDS.
Herm: TIME TO PLAY SOME HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS BY PETE SEEGER AND HIS SILVER BULLET BAND.
I want more like this!
