Not sure how we didn’t know about this until yesterday, but Seattle Seahawks FB Derrick Coleman has been legally deaf since he was three years old. He’s also the centerpiece of an excellent new Duracell ad that serves more as a PSA for Coleman’s accomplishments than a battery commercial. Derrick’s the first deaf offensive player in the history of the NFL, and the first deaf player overall since 1992.

Coleman narrates the commercial himself and talks about the challenges he’s faced not being able to hear, and how he felt after going undrafted: ”They didn’t call my name…but I’ve been deaf since I was 3, so I didn’t listen.”

Urge to hate fading…fading…fading…gone.

As far as the challenges he faces on the field, Coleman says that he reads lips in the huddle.

My lip-reading ability helps me in every aspect of my life. That carries over to football, in the loudest of places. Everyone knows they should look at me when they talk, and we shouldn’t have any problems.

Have a look at the commercial itself, this is pretty cool:
