In keeping with an old Detroit Christmas tradition, the Lions have nothing to play for in week 17.  But they made a surprise move that will allow us to post some boxing day speed-porn. So, thank you for being you, Lions.

They signed Carlin Isles, the fastest player in international rugby (and possibly any non-track sport) to a practice squad contract as a wide receiver and kick returner. Isles is a former WR at Ashland University, where he was also a track & field All-American and ran a 10.13 second 100 yard dash.

Isles’ reported 4.19 40-yard dash time attracted the eyes of U.S. Eagles rugby coaches. Within a year of picking up the sport of rugby sevens, he was making the best players in the world look foolish by doing things like this:

Isles apparently ran a 4.22 for NFL scouts in a recent workout which was good enough for the Lions to declare prima nocta on him. The Lions are smart to finally bring in a speed receiver since they have a history of “possession” guys like Charles Rogers and Titus Young not working out for them.

As for Isles, the good news is he’ll make $5,200 for a week’s worth of work and probably only lose $2,000 of that in a week’s worth of muggings.
