You almost have to admire the audacity of Dan Snyder’s behavior these past few weeks regarding the mounting pressure to change the name and mascot of his beloved football team.
Not only has Snyder continued to state he will never change the name, he met with Poarch Band of Creek Indians in Alabama yesterday in a meeting put together on short notice by a DC lobbyist who cut her teeth in George W. Bush’s administration to discuss “economic development issues” and not the team’s name. As a matter of fact, despite the fact that tribal leaders for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians protesting the team’s name earlier this year calling the moniker “racist” and “harmful” in a letter to Maria Cantwell, chair of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, the topic never even came up.
According to USA Today, tribal treasure Robert McGhee found the brief gathering curious.
“I thought the whole meeting was odd,” McGhee said. “My understanding is that he would be visiting other tribes, or has visited them.”
So basically, own a football team, ignore marginalized ethnic group’s claims that your team’s name is an insult to their heritage, on a whim get a powerful friend to set up a meeting with a tribe that protests your team’s name, discuss rainbows and kittens, leave without addressing their concerns.
It’s almost as if Dan Snyder is an incompetent fool that has no idea what goes on outside his own little basketball court.
