A few weeks ago I FJM’ed a thoughtless column by The ESPN Columnist (we don’t use his name because he’s so offensive to Native Americans) here at KSK. I said that he should be fired and the article gained some traction; Reilly himself took note of me when he called me “one blogger” in his mailbag. Which is shocking, because the only thing I thought Reilly read was his Garfield Joke of the Day calendar.
Anyway, I thought there wasn’t anything else to say about the issue until an hour ago when Reilly’s father-in-law (the Native American he quoted as being against changing the name) said that Reilly falsified what he said.
So you can imagine my dismay when I saw my name and words used to defend the racist Washington Redskins name. My son-in-law, ESPN’s Rick Reilly, completely misunderstood the conversation we had, quoting me as saying “the whole issue is so silly. The name just doesn’t bother me much. It’s an issue that shouldn’t be an issue, not with all the problems we’ve got in this country.”
But that’s not what I said.
What I actually said is that “it’s silly in this day and age that this should even be a battle — if the name offends someone, change it.” He failed to include my comments that the term “redskins” demeans Indians, andhistorically is insulting and offensive, and that I firmly believe the Washington Redskins should change their name.

[gives a dollar to the homeless white guy with dreadlocks on the L Train]
[votes for President Obama again, for the hell of it]
[is happy even though the Giants will lose to the Bears 42-0 tonight]
In all seriousness, I don’t have much else to say. You can call me a liberal pussy douche in the comments, I’m a big boy, I can take name-calling.* But you should absolutely read the entire article by Reilly’s father-in-law, where he explains his experience as a Native American and why the name is so hurtful to him. It’s a marginalized population – 400 years of genocide and being shunted off to reservations will do that – so it’s some valued perspective for this debate.
*Except for the Redskins fan who called me a PC Nazi, who I blocked on account of all the relatives in Europe that I don’t have because of the Holocaust. Really pissed me off. Odd how a name linked to historical atrocities can do that to a person.
