It’s not just the fact that the Buccaneers lost to the Jets that has to be a cause for concern for their fans. It appears that the team is already a hive of dysfunction and dissatisfaction.

The Bucs reportedly held a players-only meeting, typically done when teams are at least four or five games under .500, before Week 1. BEFORE THEIR FIRST GAME! One of the subjects discussed: how players thought Greg Schiano rigged the vote for team captains, a title that Josh Freeman was stripped of before the season started.

Schiano was in charge of tabulating the votes for captain and there were lots of rumblings about a rift between the two over the off-season. Schiano has already denied any rigging of the vote occurred. That the players were upset enough to discuss it in private means there’s not a great deal of trust in their head coach.

Former Bucs quarterback Shaun King, who still lives in Tampa, confirmed the discord in the locker room:

“It speaks to a deeper issue,” King said. “There’s a lot of disarray in Tampa. One of the points being that some of the players felt like there was an unfair counting of the captain vote, feeling like Josh Freeman should have remained a captain. . . . Greg Schiano is a micromanager, and it’s starting to wear thin with some of their veteran players.”

Granted, this report comes from Florio, so skepticism is required. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t want every bad thing said about Schiano to be true.
