This incredible Rex Ryan press conference meltdown happened on Saturday when reporters kept pressing Ryan on his decision to put Mark Sanchez into the fourth quarter of a preseason game against the Giants during which Sanchez suffered an injured shoulder. We would have given it the attention it deserves over the weekend, but KSK doesn’t begin its regular weekend coverage until the regular season starts. So let’s start the week by giving this its due attention.

In my estimation, it’s the best NFL head coach meltdown since the Mike Singletary “can’t win with ‘em, can’t do it” tirade in 2008. The turning his back on reporters is great enough on its own, but Ryan angrily responding to a question on whether Mark Sanchez has a chance to start with “I can say anything I want. That’s the beauty of this country” is just tremendous. “What? A head coach can’t wait until five minutes before kickoff in Week 1 to name his starter? I THOUGHT THIS WAS AMERICA.”

Of course, the Ryan meltdown has already inspired a robust share of hilariously awful hot sports takes from NFL writers across the nation. Here’s a line from Kevin Manahan of USA Today, calling for Ryan’s dismissal:

Ryan, the lame-duck head coach, is now a lame-reason head coach.

FEEL THE BURN, REX RYAN. You’ll never turn your back on a scribe ever again.
