It’s bad enough being a fan of a team that loses. After the first wave of crippling despair passing, you begin questioning why you get so emotionally involved in a team that you’re not actually a part of. And what’s worse, that involvement isn’t just taking a toll on your emotional health, it’s bad for your physical health as well.

A study published Monday in a Psychological Science found that after a sports team loses, fans of that team eat 16 percent more saturated fats than they usually do.

Fans of winning teams apparently are getting thinner, too. The study found the winning fans ate 9 percent less saturated fat.

While fans of losing teams reaching for comfort teams in times of distress makes enough sense, this finding hardly explains Packers/Colts/Steelers fans, who have both regular triumph and rampant obesity. But perhaps it is these teams’ winning ways that keeps the waistlines of Green Bay/Indianapolis/Pittsburgh from ballooning past critical mass. It is therefore a public health necessity that they remain at least competitive for the foreseeable future.
