The Hall of Fame defensive end has passed away at the age of 74. One of the famed “Fearsome Foursome” of the Rams defense of the late ’60s and early ’70s, Jones was an eight-time Pro Bowler and eventually was selected as one of the three defensive ends on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary Team in 1994.
A pass-rushing force who was among, if not the first to master the head slap as a rush technique, Jones coined the term “sack” for tackling the quarterback for a loss. The problem with coining a statistical category is that it doesn’t exist during your career, so we’ll never know exactly how many sacks the Secretary of Defense had in his playing days. We do known, however, that he was helpful in warding off TV bullies.
