Because Internet pranksters are as bored as the rest of us, some folks have tried spreading the false report that Tony Romo broke both of his legs in a car accident.
The site behind the fake scoop? The totally legit-sounding Global Associated News:
A spokesperson for the Dallas highway safety authority (HSA) has confirmed that Tony Romo has broken both of his legs in a traffic altercation. He has been transported via ambulance to a local Dallas hospital for treatment, and the full extent of his injuries are not known at this time, however, both of his legs were visibly broken and not life threatening according to sources.
The accident involved a 2012 BMW driven by Tony Romo and a 76 year old female driver in a 2010 Audi. The driver of the Audi was issued a citation for failing to stop at a red light before striking the vehicle driven by Tony Romo at a high rate of speed.
Romo not at fault? That’s how you know it’s bullsh*t. The hoax seems to have gained only a little traction, with just a few rubes on Twitter expressing shock about the news.
It’s a curious choice for those behind it. Romo is obviously a well-known player on a popular team, but even a lot of Cowboys fans have grown disenchanted with him. Furthermore, even if Romo actually broke both his legs at this point of the post-season, he’d probably still be healthy by the start of next season. Perhaps it’s the small scale of the story that makes it seem more believable. It’s like the tiniest bit of thought was put into this.
