Super Bowl Recipe Month: Designated Driver Drinks And The Football Foodie Year In Review
The last couple of days of the 2012-2013 NFL season are finally here. Time to suck the marrow from the bone and crown a new champion. One last game, one last party, one last excuse to eat your own weight in nachos.
It’s been a fun season having the Football Foodie column run here on KSK and I’ve loved all the comments and the interaction with fellow fans who also enjoy putting a little extra effort into their game day spreads. Thanks to all of you for making this year fun.
So let’s wrap this up with a drink for the designated drivers and the extra DUI checkpoints across the country this weekend and review the complete rundown of all the snacks — 52 of them! — from this season. [Update from the comments: Yes! Also very good for the pregnant ladies watching the Super Bowl!]
To the recipes!
Designated Driver Sparking Blueberry Non-Alcoholic Mojito
Be a good host and offer something more than soda or water for the designated drivers at your Super Bowl Party. It’s a nice way to show them you appreciate them driving your drunk-ass friends home at the end of the night so they don’t end up sleeping on your sofa or getting arrested somewhere near the intersection of Dogfish and Stone.
(Plus if you really want, you can use it as a mixer for your drinking friends.)
You will need:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
3 limes, 2 for the mojito mix, 1 for garnish, sliced
1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
Medium bunch of mint, 1/4 cup of leaves for mojito mix plus more for garnish
1.5 liter soda water
In small sauce pan over medium heat, combined the water and sugar and simmer until the sugar has completely disolved. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
In a large pitcher, muddle together lime wedges from two of the limes, 1/4 cup mint leaves and 1 cup blueberries. Add the cooled simple syrup and muddle a little longer. Add some ice to the pitcher and then fill with soda water and stir.
Serve over ice, garnishing with lime wedges and lime.
52 new recipes this season! A new NFL Football Foodie record, nearly matching the 64 World Cup insanity of a few years ago. It’s more than I honestly thought I had posted, but here they are, real life links. First dozen are on my personal site before I moved the column over here to KSK, the rest are all right here on our favorite football humor home.
It’s tough looking through these and trying to decide which ones I wanted to make this Super Bowl weekend, partially because I like them all, partially because we still haven’t decided going out or staying in with friends and honestly? I have a list 178 items long of other snacks I want to turn into football food and it’s not too soon to get a jump on the 2013-2014 season. (Damn you bourbon lollipops, I’m going to get you right if it kills me this offseason.)
Hope there is at least one perfect Super Bowl or tailgate item on this list that’s just what you’re looking for. Have a favorite you’ve made this season? Let us know in the comments. Have a recipe you’re making yourself this weeks from somewhere else? Also feel free to share with the class, I’m always looking for new tailgating ideas.
Happy Super Bowl Weekend, everyone!
