The NFL would be exponentially better from a media and soundbite standpoint if every team had its own Joe Namath. The legendary New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams quarterback is one of the true bright spots of the media circus that surrounds the team that plays in MetLife Stadium and doesn’t win Super Bowls, and I’m sure many Jets fans would disagree with that assessment, but he’s not crapping all over my team, so I love Broadway Joe for what he does.
Namath isn’t afraid to call Jets news and, more to the point, problems like he sees them, as he most notably jumped on his former team for the lack of playing time for Tim Tebow. Now, keep in mind that Namath also ripped the Jets for trading for the One Yard Wonder in the first place, but he would be a true media talking head if he weren’t unafraid to complete contradict himself. Said Namath last week of the lack of Tebow:
"We can go right to the Tebow thing. I mean, come on," Namath said Wednesday. "If you're bringing him in to play, where's he been? Are you bringing him in to make other people practice longer? Excuse me. Are you bringing him in, trying to get media headlines?" (Via USA Today)
Is he right? Probably. But who cares about stupid things like being right? As long as Namath is poking Rex Ryan’s jelly rolls and reminding everyone that he’s still the most important QB in Jets history, we get to celebrate him for being a living tribute to an era when quarterbacks and athletes in general were gods among men and could walk into a room, snap their fingers and wake up under a pile of breasts the next morning. Hell, the guy even made a MAD TV sketch bearable.
Back in May, Ape wished the Super Bowl III MVP and the man without whom this site would have a different name a happy 69th birthday, and to a lot of us, Namath has always been 69. I think Namath should be celebrated more often, though, and thus I scoured the webs for this definitive collection of Bro Namath, and all I have to say is Raquel Welch and Ann Margaret. Well done, Joe.
I want more like this!
