The May Day tempest in a teapot is the comments made by Ravens coach John Harbaugh to Baltimore’s alt-rock station suggesting that all the Patriots’ titles should be considered tainted (as in Joe Flacco has rubbed his taint/grundle/perineum on them) because of Spygate. Which means – oh goodie! – time to rehash a five-year-old story! The subject was brought up because of the Saints bounty scandal, which caused Harbs to segue to the Patriots’ form of cheating. Possibly because, as Terrell Suggs and Brian Billick could tell you, the Ravens had their own bounty system not too far in the past.

“The funny thing about that is in the end everything is brought before the light of day when it’s all said and done,” Harbaugh said. “So what happens is, even the thing in New England, no matter whether those things had any impact on their championships or not, they’ve got asterisks now. They’ve been stained.”

“If you’re cheating, in the end, you’re going to get discredited.”

In the sense that, valid argument or not (and Harbs is backtracking on it now), some will always try to discredit the Pats’ early Aughts dynasty with the cheating allegations is true, but a coach has to know that suggesting that a team’s titles are marred by illegitimacy is going to get a lot of play and provide talk radio shouting points for at least the next year, or at least until the Ravens and Pats meet in the regular season. Then again, John Harbaugh likes to complain about stuff. “WAAAAAHHHHH HEINZ FIELD PLAYED A MEAN SONG ABOUT JOE FLACCO!”

Worth noting that dredging up Spygate wasn’t even the most annoying part of this interview. That would be the part where Harbs claims teams cheat against the Ravens but he’s above snitching.

Harbaugh also said he’s actually known at certain times that he knew teams were cheating but declined to mention specific instances, because he was worried that it would result in a ton of publicity and questions about when those times were.

Sweet justice-obstructing Christ, that’s obnoxious. “Well, I won’t tell you who is cheating against me, because that would be unsporting, but I will have you know that cheating is occurring. Usually whenever the Ravens are down.”
