Celebrity Death Doesn’t Get Holidays Off: R.I.P. Steve McNair
Holy crap: Steve McNair was found dead in Nashville, shot in the head and one of the victims of an apparent double homicide. We say “apparent,” but let’s be honest: this is a widespread conspiracy that shall henceforth be known as the Summer of Celebrity Death.
McNair was drafted third overall by the then-Houston Oilers out of Alcorn State and guided the Titans to their first and only Super Bowl appearance. He was a four-time Pro Bowler, the NFL co-MVP in 2003, one of the toughest quarterbacks in memory, and — perhaps most impressively — the first Ravens quarterback to not totally suck.
Rest in peace, Air McNair. Had you not already retired, we’re sure you could play through this one, too.

Yeah, if he was still playing I expected to see ‘Steve McNair shot in head–expected to miss 5 games’
R.I.P Steve
July 4th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Goddamn it. This was the last thing I expected to see when I switched over to ESPN.

At least something overshadows Al Davis’s birthday.
July 4th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I’ll never forget the image I have of McNair — I once saw him walking through the lobby of the team hotel, wearing jean shorts, a tshirt that looked like it was from TJ Maxx, and a bluetooth headset. I’ll miss him.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
RIP. Very sad.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Can’t believe this shit happened in Nashville. RIP
July 4th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Sad. RIP Steve. He didn’t play in Houston long, but we followed his career when Bud moved the team to Nashville. One of the toughest competitors to ever put on a uniform. Some of today’s pansies could learn a lot from him.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Steve McNair?
Dayum – Dis worse than 9/11!!!
July 4th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Sounds like Steve offed himself. Crazy shit.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
@GOREGOREGORE – Five weeks? Did the bullet rip his throwing arm off? He’d be out for three, tops.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
@David West Pouts – it sounded to me like Mrs. McNair shot him and then herself, or that’s what the popular story is.
Saddest celebrity death to me since Eddy Guerrero. VIVA LA RAZA~!
July 4th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Holy fucking shit snake. I loved watching this guy play. RIP, Air McNair.
Hall of Fame? Hall of fucking Fame.

Report: Woman Shot To Death Was McNair’s Girlfriend
Sure seems like a murder/suicide with McNair as the murderer. Hope that doesn’t pan out to be the case. Then we’d all feel awkward about the tributes we’ve already typed out.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Wow, what a sad story. I always thought of Steve McNair as a stand up guy. He always carried himself so well. You just don’t see that very often with the players these days…What a big loss for the football family
July 4th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
It’s a damn shame. While this is a sad time, I will try to lighten it up with my favorite picture of Air McNair
http://tinyurl.com/l4melc
July 4th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Double homicide thankfully. I mean that only to say I’m glad it wasn’t the murder/suicide they initially thought it was.
RIP Air McNair – never really a big fan of the Titans or Ravens, but this man was one class act QB. He will be missed.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
Let’s make it lighter courtesy of Peter King’s Tweet:
Two thoughts on Steve McNair: One of the classiest gentlemen I have covered. Never an excuse after a bad day. Guts of a burglar.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
@Jay: True, though if his arm got taken off he’d probably still be listed as ‘Questionable’.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
I can’t wait to see all the media types scrambling to retract their praise of McNair as an exemplary human being once the fact that he committed a murder/suicide is confirmed.
The Nashville PD ruled this a “murder/suicide” right off the bat and only retracted that after they realized how huge a story this is. 99% chance it’s finally ruled a “murder/suicide” once all the paperwork and detective work is done.
Sorry – sometimes the truth hurts.
July 4th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
See Benoit, Chris.
July 4th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
the condos he was staying at have gate entry. if it wasnt murder/suicide,they knew who did it. mcnair was probably the most liked sports figure in nashville. fucked me up when they cutto it on local news. rip air mcnair
July 4th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
What a stud. RIP
July 4th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
I was shocked when I heard about this. Not because it happened, but because it didn’t happen in Baltimore.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
@ David West – No official confirmation on the murder/suicide, though unofficially, it’s said the Nashville PD are investigating it as one. And while you’re so quick to crucify McNair, there’s also nothing saying who shot who. Meaning it could’ve easily been murder-suicide the other way.
Why don’t you settle down and wait for some official word before getting on your high horse. I know you imagine yourself as the type of guy whose brutal honesty makes everyone respect and secretly be attracted to him, but really, everyone hates that guy, even if he’s occasionally right. Not because he tells the truth – no shame in that. But because he prides himself on being a dick about it.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Just another note, but some sources reporting McNair suffered multiple gun shot wounds – most people don’t shoot themselves in the head more than once.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Well said Skim.
Here are the facts…
McNair: multiple gunshot wounds, was sitting on the couch
Woman: one gunshot wound to the head, was laying on the floor, gun found near her body.
That would seem to indicate the woman most likely committed the murder, and would almost certainly rule out McNair.
It would also seem to indicate that David West is a huge dick.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
RIP Stevie Mac… always loved watching the dude play.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
Dear David West, you said “Sorry – sometimes the truth hurts.”
How the fuck do you know what the truth is, when the cops haven’t even figured it out. What a self-righteous douchebag you are.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Fuck David West Pouts. I’ve never gotten a clearer mental image of the Simpson’s Comic Book Guy before.
RIP McNair.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
If it is a double murder something tells me the Nashville PD needs to start the investigation with Pac-Man.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
I heard a report that the woman that they found where they found McNair was NOT his wife. this is getting bad….
July 4th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
those kurdish dont fuck around.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
The reports are that McNair was shot several times, the woman was shot only once, with the pistol near her body. She was apparently arrested for DUI in Nashville in the last day or so in a car he bought for her. She appears to be the shooter.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
RIP Air McNair.
Damn dog, you gotta watch who you’re fuckin. And know where the pistol is at all times
July 4th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
@Frank Gore: i knew it wasnt his wife when they said McNair and a female. I don’t know if it was as widely known in b’more, but in all of my years of seeing him around here (nashville),your boy always had a different piece of ass hanging on him (often times MULTIPLE broads)
July 5th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Shoulda been you, quarterback I hate. Note: Was never Steve McNair.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:27 am
“Maybe there is something about quarterbacks who emerge from the silty soil of Mississippi that marks them with the kind of toughness McNair had. It can’t be happenstance that the most passionate player of this era, Brett Favre, also hails from that state. It might be sacrilegious to suggest that McNair had Favre’s physical brilliance and athletic acumen, but the two men certainly shared a love of the game and a toughness born of their rural upbringings.”
if this is who i think it is this man needs to fucking die before the month is out.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:36 am
As a Steeler fan, I spent a good part of my life hating McNair.
But my hatred for him was born out of how fucking good he was at what he did.
McNair’s toughness made Cal Ripkin look like a burlap sack full of pussies.
Shoulda been you Joe Nedney.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:39 am
This one hell of a way for Mrs. McNair and the kids to find out that Steve had a piece of ass on the side. Then again when you marry a pro athlete I guess you just assume that he has a side piece.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:56 am
Fuck. Anything that kills a man at 36 years old is senseless bullshit when it comes down to it.
RIP
July 5th, 2009 at 12:58 am
L:
Right on my man.
Also, did you guys see her mug shot from her DUI in Steve’s Escalade 2 nights ago? She looks like she had some crazy in her.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:00 am
So damn sad. I loved Steve Mcnair as a Titan’s fan. RIP Steve.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:13 am
I remember when Steve shared the league MVP award with Pey-Pey. I thought, at that point in his career, Manning wasn’t a great leader. Sure, he was smarter than everyone else on the field and could audible from a bad play to a better one, but he wasn’t the kind of guy to lift his teammates when everything was crashing down around them.
Steve McNair was a LEADER OF MEN. He didn’t have shit to work with on the outside (drafting Dyson instead of Moss certainly didn’t help), but he always came through when his teammates needed him most. Amazingly, he never really complained about never having a great receiver to throw to. He did his best to turn chicken shit into chicken salad.
McNair never had the greatest statlines apart from his co-MVP season, but no one at the quarterback position was tougher than him. No one else was a better leader, either.
R.I.P. #9
July 5th, 2009 at 1:19 am
Fox news website reporting that the gun was not on the scene. So that should just about rule out the murder/suicide angle. Which leads to either randon shooter, Steve’s wife or Pac-Man.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:27 am
this tragic news.
July 5th, 2009 at 3:16 am
@Brad
“Steve McNair was a LEADER OF MEN”
NO ONE DENIES THIS!
/Newenglanded
July 5th, 2009 at 4:05 am
I never thought of McNair as a shotgun QB……
……Run and Shoot…….
……..anyone?
July 5th, 2009 at 4:12 am
Why is Jeremy freakin’ Schaap always the narrator of the recap videos? Also, love the somber SportsCenter music that they play.
But anyway, Christ, rest in peace Air McNair. One of the greatest competitors the NFL has seen/will see in the last 20 years.
July 5th, 2009 at 4:22 am
the fuck you say about Joe Nedney?
July 5th, 2009 at 4:55 am
@ 40lb Box o’ Rape
I hope Nedney dies the most painful/humiliating/disgusting/ joke of a death known to Man
July 5th, 2009 at 9:57 am
David West Pouts is the biggest douchebag in the history of the internet.
May a thousand donkeys have their way with your ragged mother.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:50 am
Fucking hell man. Saw this last night when I got home. This is just truly fucked up.
@David West Pouts: Why don’t you read a fucking article before you make comments you shitburger. McNair was found with multiple gunshot wounds while the woman he was with was found with one gunshot wound to the head and the gun near her body.
Man, I hate it when morons jump to conclusions when something tragic like this happens. God speed McNair, you were truly a man amongst men.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
RIP McNair.
You were truly one of the greatest QB’s I had the privilege of watching live and one of the toughest SOB’s that walked the field.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Sadly pro athletes like Steve McNair and Sean Taylor die and yet, Brett Favre rides his tractor and has ESPN follow his every move and Rodney Harrison gets a cushy job as an analyst on NBC…
Seriously, don’t gun down the athletes we like. Take the ones we hate. Then the killers won’t be frowned upon.
July 5th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
As a pats fan I still remember that ridiculous -20 degree playoff game in foxboro.
McNair was a warrior, a damn shame he never got a ring. Pansies like Vince Young
can’t carry his jockstrap. R.I.P
July 5th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I would say David West Pouts needs to admit that he’s in line to eat some crow on this story, but since this is the internet, I know it’s entirely too much to ask for somebody to come clean and admit they were wrong.
July 5th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
@ Hakim
I doubt we’ll ever see him again. Which is a good thing.
July 5th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Touche, Steve.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Wow David West, only a lowlife like you would jump to a conclusion that fast and drop the word truth on the statement.
Fuck you.
July 6th, 2009 at 12:04 am
man, McNair was the absolute bomb, I may be an eagles fan, but I recognize greatness, RIP Air McNair
and to you David West, I hope you get necrosis of your dick and it rots off slowly and painfully, you fuck
July 6th, 2009 at 12:26 am
@ David West Pouts
Can we hear your take on Michael Jackson’s death too? And Farrah Fawcett…too, let me guess, her asshole pulled a gun on her and committed a murder-suicide?
July 6th, 2009 at 1:58 am
I know the train has already left the station, but goddamn is “David West Pouts” the biggest douchebag since Peter King. Congrats, fucktard…you’re universally maligned. Way to insert your foot into your mouth. Next time, try a gun. Toodles!
July 6th, 2009 at 6:11 am
R.I.P. Steve…
July 6th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Mo’ bitches, mo’ problems… You’d think dudes would have figured that out by now.
