Harry Kalas Dies, Was The Kind Of Guy Who Would Have Appreciated A Meal At Sibling Rivalry. Kalas is best known as the radio voice for the Philadelphia Phillies. But we NFL fans know him mainly as the voice of highlights for the NFL Films clips on “Inside the NFL”. In fact, when I think of NFL Films clips, it isn’t John Facenda’s voice that first comes to mind. It’s Kalas’. He could even make an old Lions video yearbook sound like a noble endeavor. “The Lions stumbled down the stretch, but the surprising play of their young special teams is giving Detroit fans the hope that one day soon, their proud and historic franchise will rise up with a thunderous roar.” Kalas was 73. He is already deeply missed.
UPDATE: As if today didn’t suck hard enough, Marilyn Chambers died too. Oh, what I would have given to hear Harry Kalas narrate “Behind The Green Door”.

“didn’t suck hard enough . . . Marilyn Chambers”
i see what you did there.
there will be no more reason to watch the highlights of the 2008 lions 0-16 season highlights in 10 years…
With Kalas, Fidrych and that Angels rook, this has been one morbid week in baseball history.
They all die and Bud Selig still lives. No justice, I says.
Chambers, Kalas and hell even Mark Fidrych…while someone like Peter King still gets to suck air. Man, what a depressing day indeed.
/wonders what kind of inane bullshit King will spew forth concerning these events
WHY!?!?! WHY COULDN’T IT BE PETER KING INSTEAD!?!
/tears off shirt, crying…
RIP
Peter King couldn’t hold his jock strap.
…As if today didn’t suck hard enough, Marilyn Chambers died too…
The SO will have to make up for the hole in THAT cosmic universe tonight. I will try my best to be worthy.
Who?
Would it be awkward to have a nostalgic beat in her honor? Is it bad that I’m not even kidding?
Kalas was a gem, not familiar with his broadcasts for the Phils, but he was an icon for NFL Films productions. I could listen to him read the phone book.
“…she was supposedly one of the few actresses that could fully deep throat John Holmes’ erect penis… She was noted for her enthusiastic performances of deep throat, anal, lesbian, interracial, extreme bukkake, and double or triple penetration scenes. She was one of the first female stars to shave her pubic hair, a practice now routine for porn actresses.”
Indeed, we mourn the loss of a true pioneer. Kalas will be missed too, though his epitaph will pale in comparison
Having been to the Mitchell Bros. O’Farrell Theatre in SF and in the Green Door room I’m depely saddened by the loss of Miss Chambers. Funny side note, that establishment was also the place were we took one of our strip club rookie friends to for his first visit and he attempted to insert a dollar bill into a young lady as if she were a soda machine. Quite possibly the best rookie mistake ever.
Oh and sucks about Kalas too.
Miserable day in the Philly area……..the baseball game on the radio in the summer will never be the same. As Drew alluded to, a routine double-play in July sounded like poetry and heroism when Harry called it.
Sad day.
Thanks for the kind words, Drew. This is a horrible day for Phillies fans. Damn, I don’t know if I can enjoy the PK send up today. Fuck.
nice tribute Slothrop.
+1, Slothrop
/pours semen on the ground
I expected a few more tributes for Marilyn Chambers here in the comments, fwiw her Wiki page credits her as one of the first porn stars to shave her bush. I also remember Linda Lovelace shaving her bush in “Deep Throat.” That is old school my friends.
Marilyn Chambers ushered in The Golden Age of Porn aka the 1970′s.
Thing is, when I would travel during the holidays or during football season, I would have to try to find AM broadcast stations out in Eastern Colorado/Western Nebraska that were airing NFL games. Nothing says hardcore than driving 90 down Hwy 14 with a joint in one hand and the radio knob in the other desperately trying to locate a game, any game.
His voice was one I could pick out of any amount of static… now what?
Fuck man that sucks. Like losing a secret lover.
RIP the man who gave an air legitimacy to the Puppy Bowl.
First Don LaFontaine now Kalas. Look out Liev Schreiber.
Goddammit, it was already starting off on the wrong foot with the pitching staff getting shelled now Harry the K is gone. The man had one of the most distinct voices in all of sports. he was great during his time with NFL Films and even better here in Philly for the Phillies.
I will now never again hear Kalas’ deep, gravitas-laden voice reassuring me that the Redskins are poised next season to rise to their former glory.
RIP Harry, best baseball announcer and probably best in sports. We’ll miss you.
along with Vin Scully. one of the classic voices in all of sports. This sucks.
/pours some Chunky Soup on ground
Not a Phils fan so I remember Kalas from Inside the NFL. Sad to lose a guy good at his job and always sad to lose someone you remember listening to when you were growing up.
