Someone needs to tell Harry Reid that these bailout packages and pork-laden spendings bills, creating incredible deficits, will bury our economy for many, many years. Has Reid ever read a book on economics in his life? For that matter, has Reid read the U.S. Constitution? This ever expanding federal government is against everything the founding fathers believed in.

@smurphette: I’m sure Reid will play nice with him if he gets to the Senate (although he may screw him over on stuff like committee assignments). But it’s likely that he won’t be the only Democrat running, and pissing off the party apparatus isn’t a good way to win support in a contested primary.

As for the district, I don’t really think the 2004 results are all that useful. Kerry was uniquely unsuited to appealing to voters in the South, and the Republican brand hadn’t yet been completely discredited in the eyes of the public. And a ten point victory for Taylor isn’t impressive at all considering that he was a seven-term incumbent running in a Republican year. Also, Obama’s performance was particularly impressive considering that NC-11 is mountain country, and Appalachian whites were Obama’s worst demographic. And I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but I’m pretty sure Hagan carried the district against Dole. Bottom line, the district is redder than NC as a whole, but it wouldn’t be that difficult a hold if Shuler left.
