I’m getting tired of hearing people comparing Palin to Peggy Hill. This is extremely unfair. Peggy Hill, though she is a fictional person, is much smarter than Palin. Yes, there are similarities. Annoying voices, unfortunante hair, a tendency to assume superiority over others, but still.

It amazes me that, to this day the old “Willie Horton” ad is paraded out as proof of republican racism! This was an ad to show that Dukakis’ weak policies on crime allowed someone with a life sentence (for murder) out of prison for a weekend furlough- during which he fled the state to commit armed robbery and brutally rape a mother and daughter in their home. It did effectively show that Dukakis’ policies were absurd and dangerous, but the media consistently cites it as unquestionably racist… because ol’ Willie happened to be black.

Some more things to consider:
- Palin is the Governor of ALASKA. You want to talk about a state that’s out of touch with the rest of America? It doesn’t get more out of touch than Alaska. Again, a warm bowl of oatmeal would probably have awesome approval ratings in Alaska.
- There is ONE PLACE in Alaska where you can see Russia. Palin has never been there.
- Obama was a State Senator in Illinois. There are more people in Cook County than there are in Alaska.
- “Family values” is horsecrap. The values of the Palin family don’t apply to anyone elses. Abortions or some, small American Flag lapel pins for others!
- In all fairness, I had to look up what the Bush Doctrine was. But then again, I’m not running for Vice President.
- If you’re complaining about harsh media treatment at the hands of Katie Couric, I think you need to reevaluate your standards.
- Re: Obama’s Harvard Education – You don’t get in to Harvard Law being a complete dumbass, and you don’t get to be President of the Law Review by being a complete dumbass either.
I don’t want my President to be “like me”. Frankly, I’m a dumbass. If I were elected, I’d kick President Bush in the nuts and call him a punk ass bitch on my way to take the Oath of Office. I want my President to be smarter, more even tempered, and a better person than I am. Frankly, the combination of McCain and Palin is none of those things. When I see Palin I think to myself “Wow, apparently ANYONE can be Vice President!” and that scares me.

The radical republicans who wanted to give slaves equal rights (not just “freedom”) were by far the most liberal members of Congress. How about a more recent and pertinent example, like when LBJ hepled pass civil rights legislation, then lamented that they had given the South to the republicans for a generation. Was that because republicans liked black people so much?
Being black and republican is certainly not a paradox, but it’s silly to suggest that the modern republican party is more in tune with black interests.

All I did was call it “gotcha game”. Also in an interview with Couric, Biden talked about FDR handling the great depression and explaining it to people on TV!!! (for those of you keeping score at home, FDR wasn’t the president at the time, and anyone who has seen Cinderella Man or Seabiscuit knows, there were no TVs). We got crickets from her and her media friends. Biden strongly criticizes an ad FROM HIS OWN CAMPAIGN… crickets. THEN, he later says basically “Oh, I never saw that ad… now I think it’s fine and accurate”… crickets. Meanwhile, Palin gets stumped a few times during the course of marathon interviews AND IT’S ALL WE HEAR ABOUT!! What about the other 12 hours of tape from the three interviews she did? I’m not saying she’s the smartest, most experienced woman ever to enter into politics… but she’s also nowhere near as “dumb” as she’s being portrayed. Can we all at least agree that the media CLEARLY favors Obama? For crying out loud, we heard about Hillary for the last seven years, then she was consistently vilified and cast aside in favor of Obama by the same people who praised her all that time. McCain was always the media’s favorite Republican, but as soon as it was clear he would face Obama a fake “affair” scandal broke and he’s been characterized as evil ever since!

2) I’ve seen plenty about Biden’s gaffes as well. Honestly, he’s a gaffe machine. He clearly speaks before he thinks lots of the time. (He’s also passed some very good legislation over the years.)
3) It’s not that Palin’s been “stumped a few times” that’s so appalling; it’s that she has offered nothing of substance on any single issue. Literally nothing. Her speech at the convention? Well delivered but scripted entirely by other people.
4) The media praised Hillary Clinton for several years? That seems like news to me. The media assumed she’d be the Democratic candidate, which isn’t exactly the same thing as praise.

@Al Davis: Nagins was a douche, but are you really making the argument that FEMA effectively and efficiently coordinated disaster relief to the best of its ability? And of course Gustav was better…it was a less severe storm, everybody had figured out what NOT to do, and the parts of the city that Gustav flooded were mostly the parts still uninhabitable from Katrina. These were all basic things that the news covered endlessly. Not sure how you missed them.
Secondly, calling someone a token is not an indictment of that person, it is an indictment of the group that uses that person. Colin Powell is a real life American hero, and was extensively qualified to do his job. But the republican party thought that once they got Powell and Condi Rice on board, they didn’t have to pay attention to blacks anymore. This falls well within the definition of tokenism.
Thirdly, I didn’t vote for Marion Barry.
Fourthly, what are you trying to prove (also, you forgot Sharpe James in Newark)? What “whitey” are the people of DC appealing to? Who are the people of Detroit trying to blame? And do you really think that the people of NO don’t have even the slightest right to have asked for more from their federal government?
Do you really think that black leaders are inherently corrupt? Or that they are more likely to give in to corrupt influences than white leaders? More importantly, do you think this despite the wealth of evidence to the contrary that is American urban history?
Lastly, Presidents do effect the economy, and to think otherwise is silly at best and maliciously ignorant at worst. The effect may not be direct (i.e. the President can’t order the Dow to rise), but the President can sign or veto bills that effect the economy, his/her administration can play a role in job creation, and many of the President’s activities can indirectly effect consumer confidence.

Why is it that no one explains why Obama deserves to be our president? It’s unbelievable how much the freaking presidential candidate has been marginalized in this election. I’ve heard why Palin is unqualified 10 million times over the past month, but not one single person has provided a cogent (and specific) explanation for why Obama is the answer? I’d love to have someone point to his track record and show me specifically why he’s the right choice for our country. It seems to me he’s done little more than spend his current term running for a higher office. Very admirable.

I’d love to have someone point to his track record and show me specifically why he’s the right choice for our country.
I mentioned his legislative accomplishments above — one of the most impressive first term set of legislation I can think of. He’s shown a demonstrated ability to work with everyone from liberals (Feingold), moderate Republicans (Lugar), and right-wing nuts (Coburn) to get things done. Loose nukes are the biggest national security issue out there, and he led on that. Government has gotten corrupt as hell, but he’s implemented lobbyist reform and not taken a dime from them — unlike McCain, who has seven lobbyists running his campaign, doing business from his damn bus. And he’s implemented government transparency too, putting all the earmarks and spending calls online for anyone to see.
He’s got the right take on foreign policy. It’s not just that he had the balls to speak out against the Iraq War when no one else would, it’s that he was right about calling for a timetable long before Maliki and even Bush agreed to it. And he’s been calling for refocusing on Afghanistan and the assholes who actually attacked us, for a long time now, and Mullen et al. are now saying once again he’s right on that. He knows it doesn’t mean we’re a pussy if we talk with our enemies — like FDR, Ike, JFK and Reagan did and like Kissinger, Baker, and a ton of other recent Secretaries of States have all urged as well.
On the economy, as someone noted above, Democratic presidents have universally been better on the economy by most measures — GDP growth, NYSE rises, inflation, unemployment, etc. His tax plan will give 95% of people a tax cut, and only hike it on the people making over $225,000 a year. Unlike McCain, jhe’s surrounded himself with brilliant people on the economy, from Buffett to Summers. McCain’s chief economic advisers are Phil Gramm, the man behind 1999’s Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act which caused this meltdown and who had the nerve to call us a “nation of whiners,” and Carly Fiorina, who managed to drive a blue-chip corporation into the ground, bleeding off 70% of its stock value and getting 20,000 workers laid off, and then bailed out with a $43m golden parachute. Yeah, no thanks.
More than policy issues, he’s smart as hell. All the racist assholes here who think he got into Harvard on affirmative action — he was chosen the head of Harvard Law Review, which goes to the brightest person in the class. And yeah, I want someone who’s that smart. He also has the right temperment, which can’t be underestimated. McCain is known as Senator Hothead for a reason. (He’s gotten into shouting matches with his Republican colleagues in the Senate, and several of them — Grassley, Cochran, Specter, etc. — are on record as saying the thought of a President McCain scares the everloving shit out of them.)

I would caution you, however, to stop labeling everyone who doesn’t fit squarely in the Obama camp as racist or unintelligent. It’s the ultimate in hypocrisy. Rational people can still disagree. Personally, I could care less if the guy is purple, I just don’t want to reflexively hand him the keys to the free world because President Bush is an idiot and Governor Palin isn’t very experienced. Just Wondering, I’ll add to what Otto Man mentioned:
1) In his four years in the Senate, Obama has introduced over 100 bills to the floor, many with bipartisan backing. (Otto Man mentioned the most crucial ones.)
2) Obama’s judgment on issues such as Iraq and the subprime crisis demonstrate an awareness of cause-and-effect. He’s deeply intelligent on these issues.
3) In his eight years in the Illinois State Legislature, he established what I’ve seen described as an impressive record. I’ll also admit I know less about his years there than plenty of people, but I know he helped pass legislation to get insurance for over 7000 uninsured children.
4) He taught constitutional law for several years and knows constitutional law and history in and out. That seems crucial to the presidency.
5) Since a few people seem to think community organizing is dangerous, there’s this: in the three years he spent as a community organizer, a position where you earn little money and work against a lot of resistance, he registered 150,000 voters in areas where voter registration numbers have been historically low. To me, that demonstrates a devotion to democracy and to hard work.
I’ll also admit Obama’s not a perfect candidate. Most of his supporters know he isn’t some messiah figure, even though Rolling Stone adds to that ridiculous image. And there’s a lot to be said for his ability to mobilize people in service of causes. The ability to inspire can create a lot of good.
Not all people who dislike Obama are racists, but a lot of the reflexive reactions against him take the form of racist language. And I’ve been surprised by how little McCain supporters actually know about McCain. (I’ve met plenty in canvassing for Obama.) Both sides vote in large part against one candidate as much or more than for their candidate, but I’ve been surprised by how little of McCain’s support has to do with his policies and how much it has to do with their perception of Obama and his policies. And more often than not, those perceptions have been wrong.

No, he didn’t go to Harvard as affirmative action – he went to Harvard as a legacy. His dad went there. That doesn’t mean that he’s not smart, it means that he’s no different than every other politician. People get the sense that he’s a Hyde Park, arugula-eating elitist who’s never had a real job and looks down on everyone who doesn’t live in NY, Boston, LA, or Chicago (the only cities in mainland America he’s ever lived in). He is a smart guy, but why the hell does he have to run for president after being in the Senate for two years instead of learning more about politics on the national level? Hussein all but bragged about his former drug use in one of his memoirs. As far as his crucifiction… I must have missed that in the midst of the media’s shameless cheerleading and nightly masturbate-athon for all things Obama. The only time his past drug use has ever come up (other than in his own cool narrative) is when Hillary began to ponder aloud how those evil republicans would use his race and drug use against him should he win the democratic nomination. Oddly enough, those dirty SOBs have yet to mention his drug use!! In fact, the only time that the issue of race has been brought up at all was on the numerous occasions when the Obama campaign preemptively casted aspersions about the prejudiced things that their opponents- and Americans in general- would say or believe. They have been so effective at doing this that the entire election is portrayed by the media as a barometer of our nation’s racial tolerance (RE: If the black man loses, we are still a racist nation!).

Ape, I agree with you fully in regards to re-reporting from the media. Let’s compare that to the how many times Bush’s National Guard service was brought up as breaking news… or the daily “update” of regurgitating the same nonsense about Sarah Palin… or how McCain “lied” in his ads by saying Obama voted to teach sex education to kindergatners (while not the first politician to cherry-pick a piece of legislation for political gain, since the measure changed the sex ed. ages to include kindygartners, it was no more a “lie” than 90% of the other ads). Let’s not pretend that a vast majority of the media do not have a horse in this race… or an overall agenda in most cases. The only point that I was trying to make was that Obama was never “crucified” for his past drug use as was suggested, nor was W ever “justified” for his (I’m sure you could find more than one story in your archives to prove this!). While I did say his drug use “was never brought up”, I meant in the course of the primary and presidential campaigns- thank goodness I wasn’t under oath!

I believe the commonly used definition is “abandon’s conservative political principles to reach a bi-partisan consensus” (to abandon liberal one’s apparently has another definition: “traitor”). W and McCain’s “maverick” personalities are precisely why conservatives DO NOT love them. However, just as there are more moderate dems than there are “ACLU card carrying, anti-religious ultra-liberals”, there are also more moderate repubs than there are “constructionist,bible-thumping ultra-conservatives”. It is true that most conservatives (at least in my experiences) never LOVED Bush… we just supported him once he was up against Gore/Kerry. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who believes he handled the second phase of the Iraq war effectively, but to blame the current economic situation on his is a little far-fetched. This time around conservatives had two not-so-great options in Romney & Huckabee, and they split our votes. Once McCain won the nom, we showed our disapproval (some even borderline preferred Hillary!) but came back to his side once he added a true conservative to his ticket (and was facing an ultra-liberal!). Finally, I never once said I was “mad” that the media didn’t make a big deal about his drug use, I was simply reacting to your absurd notion that Obama was scrutinized while W got a free pass. You liberals always think you can win an argument by finding the slightest shred of inconsistency (or, when possible, hypocrisy!) which you can concentrate on instead of the overall point.

Damn…I missed all the fun….McCain sucks, however, Obama is 50 times worse, you are wasting your vote if you vote for either of these douchebags. Vote 3rd party. The bailout is a joke, Fannie Mae had it’s dick so far up Barney Frank’s ass that he got mistaken for a shish-ka-bob, and of course, he liked it, like the Fannie Mae cocksucker he is *literally*. McCain is a fuckin moron for voting for the bailout, but at least he knows how to pick a VPILF. Obama wants change, then picks a guy that has been in the fuckin senate for 30 yrs. Yeah, that’s fucking change right there. One of the most liberal senators in the senate who has no ideas of his own is telling everyone how much he’ll change Washington…..well, I guess if go from a Republic to Socialist, that is change, and if you go from a sovereign America to one controlled by the UN that’s change. McCain, he’s a liberal too, one that basically says he’s a republican. I will give him this, he did warn of Fannie and Freddie in 2005 and co sponsored legislation to regulate those out of control loans, of course that cocksucker Barney Frank said there was no need, Fannie was in great condition, then proceeded to get his stomach pumped from all the cum he had in his stomach. This guy is too far gone for Joe Gibbs to cure.
But, McCain will prolly win, Obama’s biggest demographic, besides the blacks is the younger crowd, he has an insane lead in that group…but those people don’t work. Obama will employ the vote early/vote often old school style Chicago politics to offset that.
Honestly, people voting for McCain, they’re just doing so bc they’re republican for the most part, the people voting for Obama though, the one’s that aren’t liberal, they’re morons, every last one of them. JMILL stated the case much more eloquently than I ever could!! There is only one thing I disagree with… I think Obama is going to win. McCain is too big of a pussy to attack him the way he has to in order to win. Sure, the outside groups will run ads about Rev. Wright, Ayers, Acorn, and the like, but it won’t have nearly the impact of the swift boat campaign (For Christ’s sake, Kerry was running as a hero veteran and all of those men he served with came out and basically said he was an unaccomplished cunt who disgraced the uniform! This would be like 10 guys from the Hanoi Hilton saying McCain sold out the country in interrogations… or fellow community organizers saying that Obama failed to um, organize the community or something!!). McCain isn’t a “nice guy”, but that’s the silly-assed self image he clings to, so when the media constantly berates him for “attacks” which aren’t very harsh and “lies” which are your basic run-of-the-mill selective facts that all politicians use on a daily basis, he gets flustered. He missed out on a golden opportunity with this bailout plan by trying to play “bi-partisan maverick” instead of standing by a principled “I told you so” stance. McCain’s a pussy politician, so we’re gonna have a pussy president instead!!
