In fairness to the therapist (hehe…the rapist), I think they are required to alert the police if they think their patient is danger to themselves or others. A emotionally unstable football player in an Escalade could pose a threat to the public, especially one with a gun. Uh…dick joke.

I understand the part about alerting the police, but telling Jeff Fisher or anybody in the Titans organization strikes me as a breach of professional ethics. The therapist’s duty is to Vince Young, not the Titans organization. Further, I can’t see how any Titans player could ever feel comfortable talking to this therapist again if the player feels that there is the possibility of confidential personal information being divulged to his employer. Of course, if the therapist thought that Jeff Fisher was in fact Jimmy “The Mouth of the South” Hart, then all bets are off.

many states have laws that require psychs to make disclosures about patients if they are convinced the individual will seriously injure or kill themself or others. they are sometimes referred to as “Tarasoff” laws, after a CA case where a psych was sued for negligence/wrongful death for failing to warn a woman his patient said repeatedly in sessions that he was going to kill, and he killed her.
thus, i’m not surprised or concerned that the psych reported the suicide talk, but i’m not clear on why she called the Titans instead of the cops. unless her name is Mary Kate Olson.

Yeah, once a patient says they are contemplating hurting themself or others, that whole confidentiality thing goes out the window. The Psychiatrist’s responsbility is to make sure they don’t/can’t harm anyone, including themselves. He made the right decision.

You’re a young man, your face is all over the internet, papers and tv, women THROW themselves at you constantly, you have more money than, well, it’ll take your posse a LONG time to spend it, and at least in Vince’s case – his mom gives a crap.
I know therapists help people, I’m just trying to figure out what he has to be depressed about? UNless he’s bi-polar or it’s chemical (non-drugs) in nature.

I don’t think anybody questions the shrink’s judgment in alerting the police. The issue that I have is why the Titans organization and Coach Fisher were involved. It did not seem that Vince indicated that he was a threat to anybody but himself, thus I do not see how Tarasoff applies.

it is technically correct that you can break confidentiality rules if you believe your client is going to hurt himself or herself or others. But that doesn’t mean you tell the media. I hope the therapist faces some serious consequences

Listen, your all being terribly insensitive. If I was told I couldn’t go to an all men’s club and dance around with my shirt off…I might contemplate offing myself too. Why can’t people just accept Vince for who he is? That’s what this is really all about afterall. There’s a conversation between Vince and Jeff that’s just waiting to see the light of day! :D
