MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

That’s a real banner they put up in Gillette Stadium. I’ll have you know I will now be hanging a “2008 – TOM BRADY TORN ACL” banner in my basement.

Your banner says 16-0, but your eyes say 18-1.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
That banner looks like it can soak up a lot of tears.
/and fahkin one
September 9th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
read the comments in the Globe link. You can taste the bitterness
September 9th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
ugh. can’t we have some dignity with our bitterness and tears? also, dumbest banner since I.N.R.I.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
The 19-0 banner is in a Nicaraguan soccer stadium.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Years from now a young, idealistic child will turn to his father and ask “But Daddy, where is the Super Bowl Banner?” Then will come the crying and the beating of a lifetime.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Just wait until Cassell kicks everyone’s ass. That will get the AHAHAAHAHAHA tag.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
That’s like when HS team put up banners for things like “District Runners-up”. Or Upwards basketball where they don’t keep score because someone might get their feewings hurt. Outcome based NFL… everyone’s a winner here! Don’t make Tawmmy cry!
September 9th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
The Dolphins will unveil their 1-15 banner next week.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
I amend my previous statement: This is less stupid than the Colts’ “2003 AFC FInalist” banner.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Just wait until Cassell kicks everyone’s ass. That will get the AHAHAAHAHAHA tag.
I love how no Patriots fans seem able to spell Matt Cassel’s name. Seems like a huge vote of confidence. He’s only in his fourth year with the team.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Impotency at its finest…. ive banged so many chicks… and i actually finished and went all the way with one of them!!
September 9th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
As a Pats fan, I gotta agree with the stupidity of that banner It would be one thing if it wasn’t hanging next to three Super Bowl banners, making it look like Antonio Alfonseca’s sixth finger… blecch.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Have the Patriots become the Boston Bruins? remember when they use to hoist a banner for finishing 8th place in the playoffs?
Put that crap in the mens room urinal where it belongs!
September 9th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Institutionalized douchebaggery. One expects nothing less from the Pats.

That concept already got the AHAHAHAHAHA tag

@ Slothrop
Score on the I.N.R.I. reference. Today we’ve got a Blasphemy Daily Double on two of Drew’s posts.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
What’s so weird about this? I hung a banner in my bedroom the last time I got to third base.

I know, right? Because that season ended in a loss on the road after already upsetting a higher seeded team the week before whereas this one ended in the biggest upset with the biggest choke job in superbowl history. I see your point.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
I would love it if this actually worked, Cassel ends up doing to Brady what Brady (and to a lesser extent Romo lest we forget tonyhomo.com) did to Bledsoe
September 9th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
@31, the Colts’ banner could only be worse if it read “Participant.”
September 9th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
“I would love it if this actually worked, Cassel ends up doing to Brady what Brady (and to a lesser extent Romo lest we forget tonyhomo.com) did to Bledsoe”
It would be great to see, but the reality is that Bledsoe didn’t win 3 championships for the Pats. His only ring came from holding a clipboard.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:33 pm
@Slothrop – That would be perfect:
New England Patriots
Super Bowl XLII
Participant
I guess that’s why they make AFC Championship banners.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
@Sloth, why deal in hypotheticals? Your banner *could* be worse if it had your face on it, but that’s hardly relevant. I just love the fact that cheatriot fans have been making fun of that Indy banner for 5 years and never saw this coming.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
“Tommy from Qunicy” has attempted to leave a comment at the Globe site.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Or “Quincy,” even…
September 9th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
“The 19-0 banner is in a Nicaraguan soccer stadium.”
It has since been torn down, however, by all the 3rd world Buffalo Bills fans.

September 9th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
“I love how no Patriots fans seem able to spell Matt Cassel’s name. Seems like a huge vote of confidence. He’s only in his fourth year with the team.”
Does it inspire more or less confidence than Roethlisberger not being able to spell his own name in his 26th year of being alive?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Common, you don’t get to be a billionaire like Bob Kraft by wasting money, that 19-0 banner isn’t in Nicaragua, Bob just had his tailor flip the 9 into a 6 and add the words regular season.
Bob Kraft is a brilliant man,
and a giant douche

16-0 Regular Season Record, then Super Bowl CHOKE!

September 10th, 2008 at 12:38 am
im a pats fan, and putting up a banner for anything less than a championship is dumb. the colts banner is worse though. guess what, there’s an AFC finalist every year.

“SIMMONS: THE PATS’ QB SITUATION
I forgot to include this theory in Tuesday’s All-Brady mailbag. OK, so everyone thinks the ‘08 Patriots season rests in the hands of Matt Cassel. Wrong! Consider these four points:
1. During the Belichick-Brady Era, the team never worried about backup QB because they were screwed if Brady went down. With Brady hitting his 30s this year, the logical move was to spend a mid-draft pick on someone who could develop into a effective backup at a cheap price. That’s exactly what they did in April with third-rounder Kevin O’Connell, a 6-foot-6, 23-year-old prospect from San Diego State with great stats who everyone considered a sleeper.
2. The Patriots don’t just waste third-rounders. That pick meant two things: “We like this kid” and “We like this kid more than Cassel.” Best-case scenario for the O’Connell pick: He’s so good they can flip him for a first-rounder down the road. Reasonable scenario: He’s better than Cassel. Worst-case scenario: He’s the same or worse. In two of those three scenarios, the Patriots win.
3. The Pats haven’t gone out of their way to say, “We’re in no rush to find another QB.” That means they already have a plan in place, or else they would have been trying out the likes of Daunte Culpepper and Chris Simms. Hmmmmm.
4. Cassel’s contract expires this season; O’Connell’s contract expires in 2011. Wouldn’t the Patriots want the kid who’s under contract for the next four years to succeed over the guy who’s leaving? Doesn’t it make the most sense to hold the fort with Cassel for a few weeks, then turn the team over to O’Connell as soon as he’s ready?
My prediction: They sign an aging, non-threatening backup (Vinny Testaverde?); Cassel treads water for a few weeks; and by Week 12 (possibly sooner), O’Connell will be starting for the Patriots. Just remember we had this conversation when you’re claiming Cassel on your fantasy waiver wire over the likes of Eddie Royal and DeSean Jackson.

If that ranking is based on QB rating, then it means absolutely nothing. Rivers lost, Favre almost lost and was lucky that Hail Mary wasn’t picked off. Rongrastname fumbled the ball twice, which isn’t accounted for. Cassel looked decent but we’ll see how he does once a team has all week to gameplan for him. Romo’s not on this list, but dominated the Browns.
I have McNabb by the way – who played great on Sunday.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
“Romo’s not on this list, but dominated the Browns.”
Oh, wow. I have never seen anyone do that before. Let us wait and see how he does in January with a pass rush in his face and a TO that has disappeared in a big game (again). Until then, he can get in line with the rest of the overrated QBs in NFL history in the footnotes section.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
@ El Duke
and the Bills will unveil their “Hey, we fucking won one in a row” banner next week.
September 10th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
I think it’s hilarious how everyone at ESPN still thinks the Pats have a chance this year, like losing Tom Brady doesn’t really mean that much. They’re idiots, would it kill one of those ass clowns to just bust out and speak the truth? Anyways, I can’t think of anything more frustrating than being a Seahawks fan right now. Jeez they were unprepared.
September 10th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
“Until then, he can get in line with the rest of the overrated QBs in NFL history in the footnotes section.”
Um … huh? I could give a shit about the Cowboys, but I do like an underdog player who makes it big. Romo is an undrafted QB in only his second full season as a starter who is already a consensus top-10 QB in the NFL, most people would say top 5. I’d give my left nut for him to play for my team. Probably a little early to start calling him overrated. Just say you hate the Cowboys (how original!) and move on.
September 10th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I’m a Pats fan…and that banner is gayer than Barney Frank…but enough about my fucked team…lets turn this into a Colts banner is the zukkors discussion to detract from my suckass team.

@Najeh’s
Tell him to win a playoff game, and we will talk.
September 10th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
@Gern
The Pats do have a chance… of sneaking into the playoffs and getting eaten up and shit out in the first round.
September 10th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
“Tell him to win a playoff game, and we will talk.”
Yeah, people keep saying that, and it makes no logical sense. Young QBs typically get into the playoffs first, lose some games, get some experience, then win playoff games. Both Mannings lost multiple playoff games before they ever won one. The list of HOF and near-HOF quarterbacks who lost a few playoff games before becoming SB champs is pretty long. The fact that he’s 0-2 in playoff games means absolutely nothing in terms of his personal talent level, except that he’s at the beginning of his career.
Your argument means that you would take Matt Hasselbeck over Tony Romo. Good luck with that.
September 10th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Actually, check that: Most young QBs in their first couple of seasons starting don’t even sniff the playoffs, much less get a chance to lose a playoff game. I didn’t realize Roman Gabriel never won a playoff game at all (0-2), nor did Trent Green (0-2) or Steve Grogan (0-3). It’s just funny to me how many No. 1 draft pick QBs suck for most or all of their careers, but people call Romo “overrated” when he’s only played one full season. There are about 26 GMs in the NFL who would strangle their current starters to get him.
The expectation that a QB in his first or second full season must win a playoff game or he’s “overrated” does not match up to what happens in the NFL. I would put a bullet in fucking Huard and Croyle for my Chiefs to have Romo.
September 10th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Is it me or is this banner something MR/Mrs Faulker would hang in Gaylord’s room next to the 5th place spelling bee trophy?
September 11th, 2008 at 8:15 am
@Najeh’s
Yeah, he’s an overrated douchebag. That’s all I am saying. Do not waste your time overanalyzing it.
