This Week’s KSK Commenter Draft: Music Videos You Demand Be Placed Back Into The MTV Rotation
05.09.08
As you know, MTV doesn’t play videos anymore. They air shows like “The Hills,” which is half an hour long and has three lines of dialogue. Bill Simmons thinks it’s comic genius. That fact that Music Television is now 100% music-free, combined with the slow death of the music industry due to file-sharing, has all but ended the existence of music videos as an art form. You may still get the occasional big-name artist dumb enough to produce a $500,000 music video that comes out of his own future royalties (read the contract, Kanye), but those are few and far in between.
The Golden Age Of The Video has all but passed us by. And that makes me said, because music videos have long been an excellent source of hearty spank bank material for yours truly. That Big Boi sure knows his way around a big phat azz. A true humanitarian, for sure.
Videos used to be safe haven for chicks who were too untalented to be real actresses but hot enough to deserve camera time of some sort. We have put legions of smoking hot, semi-skanky women out of work. They only work they get now is the occasional Coors Light poster. What’s a Hawaiian Tropic girl to do? It’s not right.
I have two criteria for any music video to be successful. I think you know what they are. That’s right, baby: HOT CHICKS AND HOT LICKS. Which is why it’s odd that my favorite video of all time features neither, and comes from a group that, under usual circumstances, I can’t fucking stand.
Now that’s high art. You can’t go wrong with Nathan Wind as Cochese.
Anyway, your turn. We’re making MTV an all-video channel again and you’re picking the videos that deserve to be in the rotation. THE RULES: Pick one video at a time. Once you pick, YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL TEN MORE VIDEOS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN TO SELECT AGAIN. And try and provide a link to your favorites if you can, so we can all share in the goodness.
Also, once one video from any artist has been selected, that artist is off the board. That makes your choices a little dicier. Which video from Video Vanguard award winner Tom Petty will you choose? Will it be “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” or will it be nothing? I bet I can guess.

Now this is a clean place. I am really a phone sex operator and operate Click Here to see my profile I play all sorts of fun stuff and nonsense and if you really want to take some fun you should follow and find me out. Im live a lot!
Easily, the post is in reality the greatest on this noteworthy issue. My partner and i harmonize with your conclusions and tend to thirstily look forward to all your upcoming updates. Saying thank you will not just be ample, for your extraordinary lucidity in your writing. I’ll directly grab your really simply syndication feed to keep abreast of any kind of updates. Excellent work and much success in your business enterprise!
North Star, your MGB pick is FAIL because “Hello Time Bomb” is where the hotties are.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23nfW7Q2J3g
That being said, for my pick, which I cannot believe is still available given the inherent love for Anime that many on this board have to have, consists of Matthew Sweet’s “Girlfriend”.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9aWPTCc2r0
How a song in GHII hasn’t been picked yet escapes me.
I can’t believe no one picked one of my favorite videos on MTV ever. Jane’s Addiction – Been Caught Stealing
I’ve heard the term “Steal of the Draft” thrown about rather casually here, but this is the equivalent of getting Brady and Tomlinson as undrafted free agents:
The 1985 Chicago Bears – “Super Bowl Shuffle”
I win.
I just thought of two other videos that I absolutely love….
Unsane – Scrape
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dy7Cg36qfY
Chromeo – Needy Girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXuESUaESHY
Sorry for the late posts, but this may be my favorite mock draft ever.
Hakim,
I haven’t picked in a couple days, but somebody has already taken George Harrison. I remember this because I wanted to make the same selection you did. Thing is, I like the other version- the one with the kid trying to win the pretty girl a porcelain ballerina in an arcade. But still, the squirrel playing a pipe-shaped saxophone in your version is pretty cool.
Again, I’m late on this one, so there’s no way there’ll be many more picks. I’ve got just one more to drop and I’m done: George Harrison’s “I Got My Mind Set On You”
Yeah, it’s utterly cheesy and the whole ‘sole dance routine’ has an uncomfortability factor of +11, but for Christ’s sake, the grandfather clock is dancing in this video! And the rhino head is singing along! The whole goddamn cabin is alive!! ALIVE!!
For the video really…
Bonnie Heart – Total Eclipse of the Heart
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55nTwg5NIPM
A significant number of people had to take acid and/or nearly OD on coke to get this video on the air. It’s a classic.
hmm I suck. try THIS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5t7X1ZoYq3k
Matthew Good Band -Apparitions linky
That should have read “Modern Blues + Taking Laser Tag too seriously = Strange Times ~ The Black Keys”. Instead of lame, it turned to teh suxor.
Apologies.
Modern Blues + Taking Laser Tag too seriously + Strange Times ~ The Black Keys
A video so bad, it’s good from the best band no one has heard of…
Whale – Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S2sVF5JR1c
As long as I’m at it, I’ll make another selection: Dschinghis Khan’s “Moskau” That’s German Historical Disco at its finest. It was six people (four guys, two girls) who dressed up in silken costumes from the orient and sang about Russia and Mongolia while doing elaborate dance routines. I first saw them on TV when I was a kid. We had Cinemax and at the time (mid-late ’80s) the channel had a weekly feature called “Friday After Dark”, in which they showed poorly-dubbed soft core European porn. Big Fatty Drew has riffed on these Skin-emax flicks, like the “Emmanuelle” series, before.
Dschinghis Khan performed a song (and, thank God, nothing else) in a German movie of this ilk. When I saw it, I was thinking “Get those weirdos off the stage and and make the Fräuleins get naked!” Twenty years later, I found this group accidentally on youtube.
@ Westbrook Is My Anti-Drug
Don’t forget what Bart Simpson said when he became a Jazz drumming prodigy and then hurt his hand and couldn’t bang the skins anymore: “I used to be a great drummer. Now I’m useless- like Phil Collins. “
The Clash – ‘Rock the Casbah!’. I fuckin’ LOVED that armadillo growing up.
Genesis in their prime, at least to me, was when Peter Gabriel sang lead and they performed songs about hogweeds and lighting shit on fire.
If MTV started a new channel that played nothing but old episodes of 120 Minutes back to back, 24 hours, I’d shell out for that.
Big ups to Peb for taking Vapour Trail.
My final pick. Frente — Ordinary Angels.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov7BAXBJWp0
@Westbrook
You are indeed correct, sir. I didn’t remember that Genesis and Phil Collins (as a solo artist) are vastly different things when I wrote that comment. Now that I think about it, Genesis in their prime was a lot better than I’ve given them credit for. I think my casual memory of them was sullied by Phil Collins’ solo Disney shit. The guy from Mike and the Mechanics was better.
Daft Punk – “Da Funk”
Like “Sabotage”, another Spike Jonze classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZQ_vSDXXXI
Dude, that’s Phil Collins solo. Aside from “In the Air Tonight” he’s liquid ASS as a solo artist.
My backup pick for Genesis would have been “Illegal Alien,” just so I could apply the “a rittre lacist” tag to my comment.
@Westbrook Is My Anti-Drug
Good call on the “Land of Confusion”. I was never much of a Genesis fan but I always liked that video, made by those British Puppeteers. For the most part, Genesis made good, memorable videos back in the ’80s. I’m glad you didn’t draft “Another Day In Paradise”, though.
No, THIS is the steal of the draft
Genesis – Land of Confusion
I have to say, I’m satisfied with my draft. I got both my favorite bands with my bookend picks, and two sleepers in the middle.
Drew mentioned Tom Petty at the end of the post, but I don’t think anybody has actually selected him yet. So I’m drafting “Running Down A Dream”. Petty’s made several great videos, but the animated “Dream” is my favorite.
If Comish says that’s an illegitimate pick, then I’ll take Billy Ocean’s “When The Going Gets Tough”. It has scenes from “Jewel of the Nile” plus Danny Devito, Michael Douglas and a still-hot Kathleen Turner dancing in white tuxedoes. For me this song is a secret guilty pleasure.
Steal of the draft…
Wrong Way–Sublime.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqCOXH-nMM8
Billy Idol – Rock the Cradle of Love
No love for “Coffee and TV” by Blur? I’ll take it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWUil383us4
@ smaaron
love the Nelly pick, if for nothing else than I think she’s the only person that my wife would consider inviting into our bed with us… then agian, maybe that’s just my imagination
Since I’m comming in late, I’ve been awarded some supplemental picks:
1) The Pogues & The Dubliners’ “Irish Rover” video.
2) The Traveling Wilburys’ “End of the Line”. They filmed it right after Roy Orbison died and he’s represented in the video by his portrait and one of his guitars sitting in a rocking chair that’s moving by itself.
3) James Brown’s “Living In America”
Late round value picks!
I’ll kick off the inevitable run on foreign language videos with a smokin’ hot Pole: Virgin’s “Szansa” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WX_wN9zMB0 ), the only thing worthwhile from my 3-week stay in Armenia. No clue what she’s saying, but I think it might be better this way.
@ dick_gozina
The first video I had in mind when I read this post was Iron Maiden’s “Can I Play with Madness?”. This vid has Monty Python’s Graham Chapman as the uptight art teacher who goes on a Metal journey. I figured this would be a safe pick, but dammit, you took Maiden way before I could. Well played, sir.
This is like a wonderful collection of terrible cassingles drew once owned!
Wow, this is a great party, but I’m really comming in late so most of the groups and videos I had in mind are off the board. Here’s one: Lou Bega’s “Mambo Number Five”. It’s full of hot chicks and (I don’t care what you say) it’s a good song.
God Lives Underwater – No More Love
This band wrote great song but got no mainstream love. I almost went with “From Your Mouth” because the video is cool, but “No More Love” is the better song.
No More Love – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxEb2FrQUbE
From Your Mouth – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9itgAyS4KKs
Fast Life Kool G Rap ft. Nas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE6E1jHc6hM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3FMenn7vrY
Sie is Weg (She is gone in German) – Fantastischen Vier
You wont understand a word they say (unless you know German but very cool vid none-the-less), but it is a cool video….
“All These Things That I Have Done” by The Killers
Squarepusher – Come On My Selector
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxEb2FrQUbE
@smaaron – MTV Hits is on my digital tier and it’s only $10 more a month than regular cable (i.e. Channels 1-80). I’m on Time Warner Cable though.
More indie rock smugness: Ride – “Vapour Trail”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0tOjAESwSY
Scarface – My Block I highly recommend the video, very interestingly made and tells a clear narative.
Nobody has picked “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqyc37aOqT0
@ Da Great White Hype: I won’t pick it because you cleared them off the board but “The Next Movement” is a superior Roots video in my humble opinion.
@smurphette – I heard the song just a short time before making the pick. I remembered that the video doesn’t discriminate in it’s sexuality. It loves all.
To all – how big of a cable bill do you have to put out to get MTV Hits and the rest? My Comcast channel group includes HBO and more, but not those channels.
Benny Banassi – “Satisfation”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQtcpDGWx0w
You’re all welcome.
Gin and Juice – Snoop Dogg
I don’t think anyone picked it. Its definitely my favorite video of all time.
The Breeders- Cannonball
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RiJMZQXa2o
Wow, no one grabbed this one eh?
Mine all mine
Electric 6 – Gay Bar
http://youtube.com/watch?v=q54LJ5RsqRw&feature=related
Sam Kinison: Wild Thing
And that will close out my day.
a lot of good ones have been taken, but I’ll go with Bloodhound Gang’s bad touch.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=iTW8oUV8Aq0
OK – 1 more
Iggy & the Stooges – ‘Burning Up/Ray of Light’
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GaQ4bQmTILA
You guys have mentioned some great ones. I don’t think I’ve seen “Legs” by ZZ Top. That video had some gorgeous women.
And finally….The Plasmatics! Wendy O. Williams would rip it off and feed it to you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBd26f1XoyY
Adina Howard
Freak Like Me
and let the copycats try to match

http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/05/09/corpse.abuse.ap/index.html?iref=mpstoryview
this is some crazy shit
“It’s Not Too Late” by Throwing Muses. great song and I always thought Tanya Donelly was hot.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=1bxCokNyBv4
big pimpin was already picked as the Jay-Z representer
What, no 2 Live Crew???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0oALRL7uyY
Heroic, indeed.
Jay-Z … 99 problems … I WIN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVqI1M2yh98
Snoop Doggy Dogg – Ain’t no fun (if my homies can’t have none)
Love the title and this song in general. And Nothin’ but a G Thang was on Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic” Album so even though Snoop is on there he wasn’t taken because this is solo Snoop…SO THERE!!!
…i think cream had hotter girls than when doves cry. and was a better song too.
Shania Twain still on the board?
Man I feel like a woman was pretty hot.
Had just gotten into the Beatles when Lennon was gunned down. This video got me even more pissed off at that asshat Chapman and brought back good memories.
George Harrison
“All Those Years Ago”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7DUfjlFyqA&feature=related
Living Color
“Cult of Personality”
Reid shredding….BOOYAH!
closet freak is in my top 5 videos, it totally slipped my mind… im disappointed in myself so thus I follow this mess up by picking…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TSmbmHHrNs
The Block is Hot – Lil Wayne
just a reminder that weezy f. used to really really suck
The 1986 Los Angeles Dodgers: “The Baseball Boogie”
I know this is a football site, but we can all appreciate Orel Hershiser trying to do a white-boy strut alongside a probably coked-out-of-his-mind Pedro Guerrero (whom you may remember from his drug trafficking case, where his attorney tried a Chewbacca defense by essentially saying that Pedro had a Forrest Gump-level intellect and could scarcely figure out how to pay for a lunch let alone set up a coke deal.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW7q0JzWaoY
“Learn to Fly” by the Foo Fighters.
Hilarious plot, a cameo from Tenacious D before they got famous, and the three guys from the band playing multiple characters. Not a bad song either.
November Rain would totally have been my first choice though.
More shoegazing. I’ll take Time Baby III by Medicine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nALfIvqONtE&NR=1
You’ve got clips from The Crow. You’ve got Beth Thompson wearing nothing but a bra up top. You’ve got a kickass song. What more could you want?
Nice choice DHSC, I hear Cee-Lo has been working on some solo stuff on his own label…
Benny Benassi – Who’s Your Daddy (ummm…NFSW – unless you work in Europe)
All techno should be accompanied by similar visuals
http://www.offuhuge.com/media/9138/Benny_Benassi_Whos_your_daddy_Uncut/
@ Big Trav – You inspired me. “Closet Freak” – by Cee-Lo. This will give you seizures.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQAHMj2qFxE
I miss solo Cee-Lo.
Sorry, Steelers, someone already picked “When Doves Cry.” (Same goes for “Hypotize,” Micro, since “Sky’s The Limit” was the early Biggie pick.)
Big Trav, it’s actually Mo Vaughn on the icon. Similar body shape and hairstyle than Cee-Lo, though.
I’m going with the beauty of early 80s music videos, with their cheesy but entrancing graphics, and some mind-blowing Japanese electro pop. If Kraftwerk were Japanese and existed in the Atari era, they would be Yellow Magic Orchestra. This is they, with “Rydeen.” This shit will make you laugh until you realize you’re actually loving it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk6o4GWFIV8
Steelerspride, prince was picked a while ago
@ steelerspride… Freedom ’90 was the George song and yes, it was picked already.
One last (illegal?) pick before I have to run…
Death From Above 1979 – Romantic Rights
Light Brights are cool!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzNrYRqH35Q
@Hit Dog: Yes Poison was definitey hype back in the day, with Kool G Rap and his lisp on the hook. “You’re driving me outta my miiiiind, that’s why it’s hard for me to find…” Those were the days.
For my next pick after lunch… I’ll take Q-Tip and Vivrant Thing. Trust me you need to see the chicks in this video.
I’ll also take Breathe and Stop too since it was just basically a continuation of Vivrant Thing.
not sure if it has been picked yet but.. Queen Bohemian Rhapsody…..EPIC
